Summer and Autumn workshops
5-day Introduction to Sandcasting,
Glassblowing and Cold-working Techniques
with Effie Halkidis, Katrin Maurer and Mia Lerssi

Price: € 785,-

Monday 12 - Friday 16 August 2013
Monday 21 - Friday 25 October 2013

During this workshop, Effie Halkidis, Katrin Maurer and Mia Lerssi will introduce you to the world of glassblowing, sandcasting and finally the cold-working techniques involved in finishing your handmade objects.
Under the guidance of Effie Halkidis you will begin with sandcasting: preparing the wet sand, making the mould and pouring molten glass using a ladle or ball iron. This technique lends itself to produce solid objects or sculptural relief forms and will give you an understanding of how glass flows.
You will be introduced to the basic skills needed to produce a number of blown forms. You will be taken through the process from gathering the glass from the furnace to blowing your first bubble in glass. Both with the casting and the blowing you will work in clear glass and will learn to apply a number of colouring techniques.
On the last day, both teachers will take you through the possibilities of cold-working techniques such as sandblasting, cutting and polishing, to either finish or totally transform your own pieces. Glass casting and blowing are teamwork activities and there will be lots of time for practice, try-out, discussion and fun.

Kiln Casting
2,5-day course with Effie Halkidis

Price: € 410,-

9-10 February 2013

Kiln casting is a general-purpose term that refers to the melting of glass inside a mold inside a kiln. It contains many of the elements of fusing and slumping, but is generally more complicated and requires a greater understanding of warm glass principles.

Kiln casting and lost wax casting are suitable techniques for artists interested in achieving detailed 3 dimensional objects. It requires a great deal of patience and concentration and there are several stages involved before the final piece is achieved. Once you understand the process it's relatively simple. It allows you to work at your own pace. Modeling your ideas takes a lot of time, in fact it's a major part of the process. You can select from clay, wax, polystyrene foam or you could use organic material like an apple or paper, these can be cast and burnt out in the oven.
